Help PortSide spark change, educate kids and adults, and bring more maritime to NYC!
Award-winning PortSide NewYork celebrated 20 years in May 2025. We connect people to the benefits of the harbor on and off our historic ship, the tanker Mary Whalen, home of ship cat Chiclet. We offer maritime-themed programs in education (K through graduate school) and culture and resiliency planning. Our unique virtual museum RedHookWaterStories tells the story of our neighborhood and NYC’s maritime story in microcosm. We have the only African American Maritime Heritage program in the region. We host historic ship visits and offer free daily TankerTime on the Mary.
PortSide brings the community ashore and community afloat together, for the benefit of all.
We continue working on our goal to create a maritime center that serves the working waterfront and the general public and that creates a new model for NYC on how to center maritime in redevelopment of the waterfront. The new plans for the Brooklyn Marine Terminal (BMT) are a perfect fit for this. More at https://portsidenewyork.org/portsideneedsahome
